Back-up Power Systems
Location and Requirements
Swift Global has been one of the first Internet Service Providers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania specialising in the supply of Internet access not only to the public at large but especially to the business community with lease lines, international fax services and others in all the countries major towns. As their operations and services are mission critical to the clients they cannot afford the slightest interruption due to power failures, rationing etc.
For this very reason they asked E-Solar to provide a power backup solution which would go far beyond the usual 5-20 minutes standard UPSs allow for.
The question being not having enough time to shut down and save the data, but specifically to keep servers, computers, modems, routers and anything else running continuously for more than 12 hours until power is restored.
Standard UPSs cannot do that and they would prove very costly. Standby generators have not proven very reliable either, despite the fact that they are a much more expensive solution as an initial investment and as a running cost. Leave alone the variables, which come with them in the form of maintenance, wring or lack of service. Administration time and opportunity costs.
Lack of technical knowledge and feel IT personnel have towards such mechanical devices, etc. Besides the fact that some of their branches operate from office blocks and business centres which have no provision or space for installing generators in each office. Each Branches or Pop in case of power interruption or power rationing requires power for a period of over 12 hours/day:

Since the power backup systems have been installed Swift Global have provided effective uninterrupted service to the their clients without having to employ personnel to supervise and maintain generators, no running costs (fuel, maintenance, spare parts) or having to invest in additional space to accommodate them.
The inverters fit just anywhere convenient in the existing office space and most of the staff is comfortable with the operation of the equipment.
Even when the inverters have to be reset anybody from the secretary to the computer expert could do what is required without having to rely on our backup day or night. Furthermore with such system if required they can extend the autonomy by switching off unnecessary non-mission critical loads.
